It was a great day for bonito today!
We left the dock at 6:00am today.
I caught the first fish on the boat about 10 seconds after they dropped the hook, and we never looked back!
Had fish on all morning with many multiple hookups. Sometimes 5 and 6 at a time!
That was last year's post!
Now on to this year's report. Based on last year's lights out fishing, I convinced Captain Joe and Bob G. to join me on another great day of bonito fishing! I posted the following report in the honor of the new season of 24, which will be starting in November!
4:30am I arrive at the dock to secure us some prime spots in the stern
4:35am Walked over to 7-11 and got a coffee. Then I went over to the RR bridge and threw a Storm Shad for a while. No takers.
6:00am Captain Joe and Bob G met me at the Queen Mary and we loaded up their stuff and started rigging the rods.
6:25am Some guy who I recognize from last year's trip. Walks on the boat and attempts to set his rods exactly where all of ours have been tied up for the past two hours! He actually tried to nudge me out of the way to put his rods where he could steal our spot! No way pal!
6:40am The boat finally leaves the dock. We are rigged and ready for the slaughter! As we break the inlet the wind is howling out of the west. Although there are whitecaps, the sea is pretty calm.
8:00am Still motoring out to the fishing grounds, which I believe were somewhere just off the coast of England.
The water is considerably rougher now. The boat slows. Are we there? No. Just stopping to let a large freighter pass in front of us.
8:30am We reach our destination and the anchor is set. The boat is rocking pretty good now. Bob G. throws out a jig and hooks up quickly with a nice hefty bluefish. Not what we're looking for, but it's a start. Capt. Joe lands one a short time later.
9:45am Fishing is kind of slow. So far, no bonito or albacore. Just a handful of bluefish. Bob G. walks out of the Women's head.
10:00am With the fishing at a standstill (and the boat far from it) the captain tells us he wants to make a move. In seas approaching 7 to 8' he warns everyone to bring most of the gear inside and to secure everything else on the deck. They pull the anchor and we're off to another spot.
10:15am As we bounce along to the next spot, Capt. Joe and I were sitting in the cabin talking. I happen to look over at the guy sitting next to him, who proceeds to put his hands to his face and then pukes right into them! Uggh! Not pretty!
10:30am Time to try our luck at the new spot! But first, the guy that tried to take our spots in the stern decides to toss a bagful of garbage right over the side!
What a &%*#!
11:30am The captain blows the final whistle. Game Over!
Final Score: 0 Bonito 0 Albacore
Not the greatest of all fishing days. But (I think) we all had a lot of fun despite the rough weather and lack of fish! Great fishing with those guys again! Thanks for all the laughs!
We'll get 'em next time!
