Toms Canyon Sun-Mon 10/5 - 10/6....
« on: October 07, 2008, 05:14:46 PM »
Headed out for the second time in as many weeks on the Gambler, this time with Capt Mike at the helm. Arrived at the Toms with a sizeable fleet to our north already on the hook.
Capt searched for a 1/2 hour looking for a temp break and found what he was looking for south of the fleet.  By midnight we had the chunks flowing and 6 deep drop rigs for swords out.  The next 2 hours were uneventful with 3 deep rods going off but no solid hookups.
At 2 AM the first yft was hooked and landed and all hell broke loose!  Mad dog bite lasting close to 3 hours. 80% of the tuna coming on jigs the rest on live squid and sardines. Action was insane with 6-8 fish on at any given time. By 5 AM the bite dropped out but not until 21 guys put 52 tuna in the box. We added 2 more yft's at daybreak bringing the total to 54!  Some real sick fishing!  Most fish were small in the 25-30 lb range and 2 larger fish close to 70 lbs.
Arms and back are killing me and no sleep in 2 days - work today dragged forever but the price I'm paying was worth it!!!!

Thanks for the kudos guys. Defintely a trip to remember. Going to try and get out there again before its over, but the other half is breaking my stones already!  Bunch of family stuff going on in the next few weeks. With a freezer full of sword and yft steaks, I'm sure she wont cut me any slack!
Got to get a tuna jig stick this offseason, that tuna jigging is unreal!  Gave a few rods a shot that night, all I can say is NOT a big fan of the Trevala Rods!

I've heard a few complaints about the Trevala rods for larger fish (tuna etc.).  I have a medium action Trevala "F" series rod that I use inshore for jigging stripers and such and I love it! t^

What model were you using and what didn't you like about it?  Also, what reel and pound test were you jigging with?  Just curious.

 t^Great trip.
Nice report. TT^
I'll be on the Voyager this Sat.Hoping that the bite is on.
Toms Canyon has been very good to me in the past and I'm hoping that's where the Voyager is going.

I used a few different rods and landed fish on them.  The Trevala was to whippy for me. Felt like it took alot of effort to sweep the jig up and down. It also doesnt have the backbone for headboat use, when you need to horse the fish around and keep it away from other guys lines.I think it was the 50-80 lb F series.
Reel was a Diawa 50 saltist, 65 lb Suffix with a 60 lb - 30 ft mono topshot. Reel was awesome, smooth drag and light.
I need to put something together that is light, but with a little more backbone than the trevala.

Yeah, that's been the knock on them.  I love mine for inshore stuff, but I could see how it may not be the greatest for bigger fish on a crowded boat.

Fortunately, most of the major manufacturers now make similar type (Japanese style) jigging rods, including Daiwa, Penn, Okuma and Tsunami that won't cost you an arm and a leg.  So you have a lot to choose from. t^

Good fishing with ya Sam.  I told you you would be hooked after one trip!  Luckily we hit it perfect, too many trips coming back with very few fish.
Hopefully next season we get the return of the 80-100 lb bruisers!
