color baits

was just about to sit down on tie some flies and was thinking of certain color schemes.  what are your favorite lure/fly colors?

i usually always start with a blue/white clouser, basically the only reason is cuz lefty kreh told me to do so.  second i like the chart/white, with a little flash i think it matches a spearing wonderfully.  and once being on the hook watching spearing jump out of the waves to get away from stipers im hooked on that pattern.   ive also started tying this 6 inch eel with super hair. not sure how its going to work but suprisinly i actually still casts good.

I like the white on the bottom and a medium green on the top. A couple of strips of crystal flash in the middle. The area I fish has a lot of spearing and this pattern works!

Hi All,

All of the above are winners. I usually carry:

1. Pink
2. All white with flash
3. Purple
4. Black
5. Purple and Black

Black and purple for night; pink for weakies; all white and chartreuse over white for many species; and my all time favorite is blue over white.

I have a brownish and orange color for shrimp and crab imitations as well.

I have close friends that own a fly tackle shop so we experiment a lot with many colors and materials.

I am more of a fan of Bob Popovics stuff than any other. It is hard not too listen to Lefty Kreh (very cool).

Hi Flukedood,

It has to be Chartreuse over white (any pattern that mimics a spearing). When the sandeels are around later in the season, I elongate the teaser to better mimic a sand eel.

There are times that I tie directly to the main hook as well and soak them in shedder crab. Soaking them longer is better!

I try stuff like this for tournaments in case everything is not working. As "drome" will tell you, there are just times that the weather effects the bite so much that nothing works but because it is a tournament you want to fish until the last minute trying anything and everything.

Hey captian Ed I found some synthetic hair that really looks like a spearing.. I cant remember the exact name but it looks really good when I tied it..This is my first year tying my own teasers and rigs so we shall she how they work.. I have heard about soaking other baits in shredder crab oil but never heard about soaking teasers in it.. Thanks for the tip..

Capt. Ed is not kidding.. You could have a school of live spearing carrying your line down to a fluke... if the weather is bad and the bite is not on, then nothing may work...  A good mixture of the popular colors mentioned are good because you never know what's going to work...

For some odd reason LIME GREEN always works for me. Maybe its just me but it always seems to produce results for me.

dude, im loving the first two.  frank daignault (sp?)  says alot of times if your fishing sandworm patterns to just let them sit on top at night, no movement. that dude catches alot of stipers, so i would say its worth trying at times.

When bucktailin for Stripers in the fall on the Cape May Rips I like to use a 1oz to 1 1/2oz White/Chartruce bucktail with a 6" Chartruce twister tail and work it slow across the bottom as you go over the rip. Its STRIPER CANDY.

For Fluke, I like a 1/2oz or 3/4oz shad dart with a red head and white body or Chartruce head with white body and tip that off with either a strip of mackerel or a minnow
