O/B winterizing

Hello all, just some questions on winterizing. I have an evinrude e-tec 90hp O/B and it is easy to winterize, but do all of you run anti-freeze through the engine? If so how do you run through? Also do you remove your prop and clean the shaft and re-grease? does the prop nut need to be torqued? Sorry for all the questions I still learning. Thanks much!!

Hi Bill..  never a stupid question..  But when you say O/B  you mean Outboard and No.. never ran antifreeze thru any of mine. Unless this is a e-tech thing. 

Only worry would be if you got water in your lower unit.  that is why they say you should change it for weatherization.

I do bye the way put a little RV antifreeze into the prop in case all the water didn't drain out when I droped the motor.

Never a bad question.....yes I always run anti freeze through my engines (presently a Yami) makes sure no water sits in it and freezes.

You can get the kit from West Marine for around $35   a 10 gal container with hoses. Fill the container with anti freeze usually 5 gal does it, hook up the hose to your engine, you then hook up the garden hose to the y connection. start the water, when engine is running and pumping water, turn the gate value on the y connection, water stops and anti freeze starts...I do this the same time as i am Fogging.  Don't forget to change the oil in the lower unit also.....I remove prop, clean and greese the slin and then cover it for the winter.

According to my owners manual (Mrec) the engine drains out complete when put in the down position.
Did that last winter with no problems.

anti freeze is just a cheap way of saving you money ,always use it ,it dont take long and it will save you some head aches.I also dump a little anywhere water will build up and site like in the bilge area.

Don't forget the wash down pump if you have one.

go overboard w/ it if need be it is only saving you money come spring.why be ready to go fishing and find problems due to ice .our winters are bad on boats water is always freezing then thawing then repeat.

Outboards are self-draining when left in the down position. The prop should always be removed so you can check to see if there is anything, like fishing line , wrapped around the shaft. I change the gear case lube in every outboard I winterize and service. Its the life blood of those gears and shafts turning thousands of rpms every time you use it. Matt.
