DUMPING TRASH over the side a regular practice in NJ????
« on: October 21, 2008, 07:07:44 PM »
A good friend of mine just got off a very well known Party Boat and witnessed the mates on the way back dumping the common trash from 2 big trash cans over the side. The trash included water bottles, beer cans and all kinds of plastics. When the mate was asked if that was the right thing to do the mate responded "all the boats do it,no big deal".
I'm sure if the captain knew he would fire the mates over the rail." >:(
I have never seen this done and very disappointed so I was curious if anyone else ever witnessed such an act. I find it hard to believe but ya never know ........ 5hrug

Well Ron, if you wanted to fire me up, you did it!  I have been on boats where customers threw garbage over (and I've confronted a couple of them about it as well).  But I've never seen the mates throw entire cans full of garbage over!  That is inexcusable! >:(

I hope your friend told the captain.  If the captain condones doing that, then there is really something wrong. nosmly

If I was on that boat I would take a video of them doing it and post it on all the fishing sites!  DISGRACEFUL! >:(

There are regulations for disposing of garage certain miles off shore but that garbage must be  in the proper form, not the whole sale dumping as you saw.

All I can say is Have never done it or seen it on the Boats i have worked on or my boat, I would have complained to the capt

I've never seen it and this is the first of hearing about such a stupid act.How could the Capt.allow it ?? Wouldn't the customers complain to him and think twice about making another trip on this boat.Sounds like the Mate was trying to Pee others off , loss his job and swim home.

Separate your trash: food items, paper, rags, metal, crockery and plastic.

Step2  If operating within three miles of shore, the only trash a boater can toss overboard is fresh fish or fish parts, dishwater or graywater. Dishwater is the water left over after cleaning dished, provided it does not have food suspended in the water. Graywater is water left over water from bathing but does not include toilet water.

Step3  Put all other garbage into plastic bags and stow them below. Dispose of when returning to dock.

Step4 From 3 to 12 miles offshore, boaters must grind their trash to less than one inch, including food, crockery, rags, glass, metal and paper. This can go overboard. However, plastic and packing materials remain forbidden.

Step5 From 12 to 25 miles offshore, packing materials and plastic is forbidden.
Step6More than 25 miles and the ban on plastic remains.

Thanks for all your comments ..I dont know if the captain knew about and I would think if he did he would not allow that to happen in front of patrons ,right or wrong he would probably fire them over the rail.
It is just disturbing that you can dump anything over the side and think it's OK.I have never witnessed this and I think I would be completely sick and probably would get in a fight win or lose.

UNREAL!!  I don't know why you would dump stuff like that in the water.  Isn't it just as easy to throw it in the dumpster back at the dock... nosmly

I'd be interested to know the name of the boat.

I would rather not say I'm sure this captain would raise all hell if he truly knew,All I can say is next time get a phone camera/video and lets post it up on the boards.Like I said not sure if the captain was aware since the boat was moving and I don't want any finger pointing . I just want everyone to be aware and prevent it from happening on their trips. He did send the captain an e-mail so waiting on a response.Keep u posted
