Queen Mary Point Pleasant 11/11/08
« on: November 11, 2008, 06:12:07 PM »
Got on the Queen Mary this morning to do some striper jigging.  We fished the entire day between Seaside Heights and South Seaside Park.  It was all (well mostly all) big bluefish all day.  A conservative estimate for myself would be about 3 dozen or so.  Most of my fish were taken on Butterfly jigs.

Stripers were scarce.  I caught one about 26" on a Kroc, but there were probably less than 10 stripers caught for the whole boat.  No keepers.

Still a fun day jigging up the monster blues! t^

Good day fishing Bucktail! I have not had much luck with the Butterfly jigs. :-\  Do you have the whole Shimano setup?

Yeah, there were a ton of boats out there today.  Even a couple party boats from Belmar were down here.

Good day fishing Bucktail! I have not had much luck with the Butterfly jigs. :-\  Do you have the whole Shimano setup?

Yeah, I got the whole deal.  My rig consists of a 6'3" Shimano Trevala rod (rated for 30#-80# braid) with a Shimano Torium 16  spooled with 50# Sufix braid.  It's a nice size outfit for striper (and bluefish) jigging.

I'm looking to get one of the Trevala spinning rods as well.  Sometimes my left shoulder gets sore from all that jigging.  So with the spinner, I can switch between the two (left side, right side). t^

I usually go with the knock-off Butterflies when the bluefish are thick (like today).  Here's a picture of two Butterfly jigs.  They are both the same exact model.  But you can tell which one went through the war today! ;D

Nice try on the bass, Bob.  It sounded like the bite was off from this past week and weekend.  I know the barometer has been up there and when it is that high I find that the bite is very slow.  Right now my barometer here is reading 30.48 and rising.

I probably will not go out till it starts to drop again.

Nice job on the butterflies.

I tried them both on Friday & Sunday without a touch.

But to be honest, I lost the feel for the correct cadence on their retrieve so I wasn't all that confident using them. Strange because I had very good results using them for the first time last season.  5hrug

Yeah, I used them most of the trip.  All day I felt like you were on my shoulder saying, "Throw a Krocodile.  Throw a Krocodile."  >:D  So I finally tie one on and sure enough, first cast with it, Bang! I caught a striper!  ;D

Didn't catch anymore after that.  But I just thought it was funny that it happened that way. t^

I have the Trevala TVS-66M which is my favorite spinning rod.

So was I the little devil or angel sitting on your shoulder whipsering in your ear?

The water temps ahve to drop a few more degrees to chase the bluefish to the south. Once that occurs there should be better bass jigging.

Seems as if all the reports I've heard the past week or so say there was a brief flurry of bass then all blueifsh.
