The markup on tackle is just way to small. In business you can sell some things that have a small markup but you have to have other things that have a huge markup to make up for it. In the tackle business I hear the bait is where the big profits are. The 10% markup on rods and reels is just to get people in the shop to buy the bait.

The margin on most rods is 50%.  Reels are generally anywhere from 20% - 50%, with the higher end reels usually having a smaller margin.

A lot of the pre-made rigs are 100% from wholesaler to retail. They sell one for what they pay for two.

I buy rods and reels wholsale for my shop and I only get them 10% cheaper from big distributers then I see them at retail at Dicks, Walmarts etc. And if their is one rule in retail you can never break its to try to charge more for items then somwhere els. Guys will drive 45 minutes to save $3 on something. Its human nature.

You are so right about guys driving to save money. Look at how many guys drive to Cabela's to buy things they can get for the same price or even cheaper here.

Guys will drive around using a gallon of gas to save two cents on a gallon. Figure that one out.

When I had the shop on LBI we had numerous name brand quality rods that brought in a 50% margin.  And our rod prices were very competitive with the big box stores.

On the other hand, I remember one very popular rod that my cost was just about the same as what they sold for in Bass Pro and others.  In that case, I would keep a few in stock for those customers that insisted on that particular rod.  However, I marked it up the same as the other rods.  At the same time I had at least one knock-off version of that rod which I could sell for a cheaper price to my customer (thus saving them a few dollars) and yet I still retained my margin.
