First Welcome Aboard... grtn

Second any wind except a south wind is okay.  If you are surf fishing the NE is the best for stripers, but any wind will work like I stated except a south wind.

Good luck.

Happy Catching

when the wind blows east, the fishing is the least.

when the wind blows west, the fishing is the best.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.
Call Nick for open boat, 973-417-5756, or on Channel 68.

grtn  Chips Ahoy and welcome aboard NJSWF Philly Dood!

When I am drift fishing from a boat in saltwater, I believe the best wind direction for fishing is the direction that drifts the boat over the fish.   t^
As usual, your wind may vary.

Seems like most everybody nailed it. I like the sayings  wind from the west fishing is the best, winds from the south fish close there mouths. These are my personal opinions  and you what they say about opinions ;D
I really think it has more to do with the wind speeds. Our afternoon south/southwest winds like to come on at 10 to 15 mph and make conditions close to unfishable in most parts of the bay. It also makes the ocean very uncomfortable along with creating up welling. We can lose 7 or 8 degrees of water temp on a 2 day blow. NW tend to be light in the summer all day. East when not associated with a front will usually be light and variable. West can be light or strong depending on the front, but land  allows us to fish many areas(the reefs and fluke grounds in the ocean and most of the bay). La Nina years (as opposed to El Nino) years can provide us with some amazing weather patterns. Calm winds for days in a row and blue water inshore. One thing for sure ...if they are calling for south winds in the afternoon plan the trip to leave early and pull the pin when the wind comes on. Also don't run to the Seaside pier unless you ran out of Manasqaun ;D  Catch em up ...don't get beat up

but a day on the water, no matter what the wind is, is a beautiful, relaxing day anyway.

But there are times when your fluking, you will take ANY wind to get a drift.. lol

Wouldnt it matter on what/where you plan to fish?

for example, I would be caught dead offshore in an East blow, but Raritan bay can be fished with wind from any direction, using the land as a windbreak.

This is no bad wind direction, just optimum and not-so-optimum direction and speed.

East wind to N. East blow off the beach is always good for stripers as it stirs up things and creates a few good breakers.  I have always done well as have many of the regulars down here.
