Question about bag limits.

Ok, using stripers as an example.. we are allowed 2 fish per person.  Lets say I have my wife on the boat and sun bathing with a rod in the water.. is our boat limit now 4?  Or if I have my 3 year old fishing with us also, with her princess fishing pole.. lol.. .. does that mean the bag limit is 6?

I am using striper's as an example.. This means I don't actually want to keep 6 striper's, just trying to make a point.

According to NJFGW the limit is per person ( ie 2 Stripers @28) unless otherwise noted. Example Shark 2 per boat, etc.

So the answer would be yes, legally you could keep 2 fish per person.

It's per all registered/licensed occupants of the boat to my understanding.  So if your wife is sunbathing and not registered, she doesn't count.

 I am sure someone can add a good link but it is my understanding that NJ only has indiviual limits and not boat limits (as is the case in some NE states). When it comes to swords and sharks its a maximum per vessle not a  limit. ....It may seem simple when it comes to 4 guys and one cooler on a private boat , everbody caught a bag limit. But really one guy slept all day and did not fish so the other guys fished and helped land his limit. No big deal and it's what happens every day. The time it may become a problem is if nobody from the trip wanted thier fish and one guy took them all. Let's say he gets stopped at a Fish and game check point(as is the case in Cape May county) he will be asked why he is over his possesion limit and not what his boat limit was. Another example would be is it legal for a very good fisherman on a party boat to box 4 times his limit because some of the othe people caught nothing? I would have to say when it comes to private boats 99 percent of the time landing like there is a "boat limit" for everybody that has a heartbeat would never be an issue. The only time it would be a problem would be if you got stopped by F/G and had other infractions they could split hairs or if you were  traveling with over a possesion limit. Again this is just my understanding and I hope someone can provide a good link .

Snoopy rods rule.....it should be ok for the 6 year old to give me fish( now my possesion) because I am not having any luck and they are crushing them.

 What if you are on a party boat with a buddy. You  bag four striper at 28  your buddy has nothing legal. you put 4 in the cooler.2 for you and 2 for him. You then  find out there is a undercover fish and game jigging next to you. What will insue.

i know this when it comes to party boats/charters.. but if you get boated on your personal vessel, and you are by yourself and 2 kids (for example), nobody can prove who caught the fish.. at that point, and only that point should it be looked at as a boat limit and not a personal limit.

It's a loaded Reg...  If you and your wife are out and she does nothing but Sun bath..  you should only be keeping 2 fish.. or you keep 4 and say she was fishing...

OK let me play Devil's Advocate here.  Suppose the CO turns to one of your kids and says, "Did you catch some of those fish today?"  Then your kid responds with an honest, "No sir.  Daddy caught them all by himself!"
