Striper Virgin, HELP!!

Hey guys. Myself and a friend are planning a trip to Manasquan this Saturday to try our hand at stripers. We are making an early trip and will be fishing from a 23 WA. I have read most of the posts about fishing in the PPC area.

What I really need to know is the most basic gear/tackle/bait that you suggest for someone new to stipers.

Up in SHB we use a medium pole with a conventinal reel....We use fish finder,single hook, I admit, we buy prefab rigs.  U can use worms clams or snag some bunks.......

Thanks, where do you sugges finding the bunker? I assume a weighted treble hook? This is all new as I used to primarily do bottom fishing in my past life.

   Also, get yourselves a few diamond jigs in sizes A27, A47 and A67.  Get some with and some without tails.

Thanks for the information. It's great so far. Still need some info on where to get the bunks.... Also, do you then just live line them or let them struggle on the treble and hold on?

Well you could buy them or like you said get a "snagger"....

Its tough keeping bunker alive unless you got a live well with a good airater ,they need alot of oxygen......I forgot the sinker part maybe grab some 6,8,9's.....

Like bucktail said grab a few of them jigs he typed up above...Ill tell you this if the blues are around prepare to lose a few....might wanna{to b safe} bring a package of wire leaders....some times all you end up gettin are those blues......

If you snagem make sure he is set and dropem down    or have a second pole with a single hook and liveline up while one pole still snag's the bunks...

look for ripples in the water or birds workin/fish breaking...DONT runn up on them go to the side of them and let them swim to YOU otherwise you will spook the fish below...

Can't add to much but the worms will probably catch the most fish while the bunker will catch the biggest. I use fishfinder rigs with both.

I will keep reading with interest. Do you think most of the focus will be around the railroad bridge and PPC mouth? It seems to be where the majority of the people I have seen fishing for every other species this summer.

Ok, hopefully this is the last question for a while....

How are you rigging your clam or bunker chunks? Slide weight and 3' or so leader? Fishfinder rig? Other ways?

Also, is the best tactic to just anchor at a channel where a triutary enters or just mark fish and drop lines?

I know I am asking a lot of questions but, the last thing I really want to do is Pee off fellow boaters/fisherman in the areas by screwing up their chances at catching.

Don't fish from a boat too much so I can't help you with that but when I use chunks I use a size 6/0 hook on a fish finder rig with a 24" leader. I just buy the pre-made ones.

If you are fishing inland in that area you will not be very effective at tossing jigs and snagging bunker. That is an outside or RB game. The manasquan is shallow so different techniques will be more effective. And these will likely be small resident fish in that area. In that area my suggestion is be fishing before the sun comes up, preferably on a high to dropping tide.  Focus on structure and creek mouths. Match the hatch. Right now it's p nuts spearing and maybe some mullet. So fin-s fished low and slow, small swimmers, small spoons like Hopkins or krocs, and surface lures like spooks. If you venture out of the inlet break out the beafier gear and follow every elses advise above. Good luck

Buck - if I was to go outside where/how far do you think I need to venture? I have a 23' so it's good for a ride (if I get more ga$). I was just assuming the bay/river would be the spot for them.

They could be anywhere from right outside the inlet to 3 miles off (you can't fish for them outside of 3 miles).  Right now, while there may be a few stripers to be caught, the fall run has not started in earnest in that area.  When it does, dropping jigs down to them under a bunch of diving birds is awesome!

For now, you may actually do better staying inside.

You would need to venture as far as to where the fish are. They are following the bait. Find the bait and you shall find what you seek. Could be the inlet mouth or as far north or south as your gas tank let's you go

Again thanks for the help. I made it out yesterday but, because of local reports I decided to change species and fish for bluefish. It was great weather which made for a great day.

The reports were the bass were at Shrewsbury Rocks. Does any one know roughly how fare that is from Manasquan and then how far offshore?
