shorter for the pier, longer for the surf
Get an 8 and use it for both
When we shop for rods/reels. we look around at a few different makes/models. Pick them up touch them get a feel for it. What ever feels good and has what were looking for is the ones we buy. You could ask a bunch of people what they prefer and all will tell you something different. You really have to get a feel for it. For me a 9ft pole wood be a little to big for me personally but it might be right for some one else.. You dont need a million dollar rod/reel to catch fish....Just the right size rod/reel.

Thanks Rod...guess I will amass as many rods as my wife has purses...
When I'm purchasing a rod I do something someone showed me a long time ago, take the rod and but the but on the floor take the top eye and put your palm flat on top of it. Then push down slighty for it to bend a little, then roll the rod foward with the hand on the top eye if the rod springs to the other side and it will actually make a snapping sound then the rod is built correctly. I don't really know if this means anything but an old timer showed me this at a bnt and I've been doing it ever since. I've only seen two or three rods not do it while the same exact rod next to it did. Like I said don't really know if this is true but gotta stick with the old timers on some things
