When we shop for rods/reels. we look around at a few different makes/models. Pick them up touch them get a feel for it. What ever feels good and has what were looking for is the ones we buy.

You could ask a bunch of people what they prefer and all will tell you something different.
You really have to get a feel for it. For me a 9ft pole wood be a little to big for me personally but it might be right for some one else..

You dont need a million dollar rod/reel to catch fish....Just the right size rod/reel. chrz
Why does it Matter to you? cause I could careless.........

Lure size ? Target species? Fish size anticipated ? Is it porgies/tog/ or is it stripers on 3-4oz top water poppers. Bunker chunks or bucktails. Big blues or snappers .Bay or ocean  calm day or rough waters. One size does not fit all. Bring both then decide. AT least have it in the car at the ready. ;D

I have both and like everyone else said I mostly use the 9 footer in the surf and the 7 on piers. If you're only getting one then I would go with the 9 footer because you can use it in the surf and on piers too. The 7 footer might be a bit hard to use in the surf.

You'll never have enough, my only advice is don't go for the gusto but make sure you buy a quality setup while the weekend specials may look like a good deal by time you go through 4 or 5 of them and multiple g** damnits and mother f****ers you'll have spent way more than you would have if you bought a decent outfit the first time.

For what it's worth,, I use 9 ft for surf and 7' on the pier or boat,But both styles of fishing are very different. but with experience comes a high price tag. I used to think a $60 ugly stick was a great rod,, and they are,, But a custom rod or St.Croix, G Loomis, Star Rod, Lamiglass, Shimano,, feel so much better..    that's just my opinion..  I know many men on this forum have over 50 rods...

rofla but for real you gotta get the feel of the rod, pick up a few and check out each one. You'll know when you got the one t^. Think 2 ur self what it is ur looking 4 in the rod/reel combo then do a little research narrow it down to like 3,4,or 5 set ups, then go to the store and buy the one you like.

When I'm purchasing a rod I do something someone showed me a long time ago, take the rod and but the but on the floor take the top eye and put your palm flat on top of it. Then push down slighty for it to bend a little, then roll the rod foward with the hand on the top eye if the rod springs to the other side and it will actually make a snapping sound then the rod is built correctly. I don't really know if this means anything but an old timer showed me this at a bnt and I've been doing it ever since. I've only seen two or three rods not do it while the same exact rod next to it did. Like I said don't really know if this is true but gotta stick with the old timers on some things

Big Al,

What you are doing is locating what is commonly called the "spline" of the rod.  The spline (or more correctly the "spine") of a rod is simply the stiffest side of a rod.  It is created during the manufacture of the blank.

The snapping sound has nothing to do with the rod being "built correctly".  And I would personally be wary of a rod that made a snapping sound.  In any case, all rods will naturally pivot to the spline when you do that.

What you are looking for is to see where the guides are placed in relation to the spline.  Conventional wisdom states that casting rods should have the guides placed on the spline, while spinning rods should have the guides placed opposite the spline.

BTW, as you do these checks, you will find that many mass produced rods are not "splined" at all,  and the guides are placed anywhere along the blank.

Thanks for the info bob. I didn't mean a snapping sound like it was breaking but for lack of better words the sound it makes when you pivot the rod and it swings to the spine. I am sure glad I haven't been doing this for no reason.

Gents...
I would tend to agree there are alot of opinions out there regarding rods...brands and sizes...

I ran across someone today that stated that a St. Croix Mojo Surf 10.6 was their goto rod...surf and pier...

So many options and only one lifetime.  ;D

NJ Guy...I hear ya on the purses...I guess my dilemma is that I have a Tsunami Elite 9.3...20-40 for line
weight...and 3-5 oz/ lure...I'm looking to compliment that rod with something that will (between the 2 rods)
meet my needs most of the year whether surf or pier...
