This week will start off nice with the same weather we’ve had for the last several days.  That will change on Monday Night with rain and showers and even a threat of strong to severe thunderstorms on Tuesday into Wednesday.  Rainfall amounts could be in the 1-3 inch rain with locally higher amounts possible.  This could cause some local flooding and flash flooding conditions.  By Wednesday Night the storms will end leaving sunny and clear conditions for the end of the week and likely into the weekend.  High temperatures will be in the 70’s and even low 80’s during the week with lows in 50’s and 60’s.  The long period swell from Hurricane Nadine should be out of the area by the start of the week.  Water conditions for the week are going to need to be watched.  Monday is looking at good ratings for Monday, Thursday and Friday in all locations, however Tuesday and Wednesday are looking cautious to hazardous for all locations with Small Craft Advisories for winds as high as 30 knots and seas at 6+ feet.  This is from a large low pressure gradient with a strong southerly flow ahead of the front and a strong northwesterly flow with it and behind it.  By Thursday conditions should begin to return to normal and are rated good, however seas will still be around 4 feet at 6 seconds.

High pressure that has dominated the area will begin to move east by the start of the week being replaced by a SLOW moving cold front with areas of low pressure along it.  This front won’t completely move through the area until Wednesday.  High pressure will build in behind it for Thursday through the remainder of the week and for right now, most of the weekend.

The SPC has issued a Slight Risk for Severe Weather on Tuesday into Wednesday for NJ and surround states.  Timing is likely into the evening and overnight hours with a risk of severe thunderstorms with damaging winds.  This is still a couple of days out, so changes are possible.  I will update this as the updates are made available from the SPC/NWS.

Re: Tuesday Morning Update
« Reply #9 on: September 18, 2012, 10:38:08 AM »
Today will continue to be cloudy with gusty winds.  Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue until the widespread rain and thunderstorms move in this afternoon through the night.  The most strong and severe storms will occur this evening into the night.  Storms will be coming out of the southwest moving northeast.  I will continue to update with any pertinent information.

Current Surface Analysis with Radar

Current Radar

Here is the current Convective Outlook from the SPC.  Conditions will be conducive for squall lines with damaging straight line winds, embedded supercells capabale of producing tornadoes and even some hail.  There is also a chance of single supercells to intensify and spawn tornadoes.  The risk is only Slight, right now, however there may be an increase to a Moderate Risk later this afternoon with Watches being issued as well.

« Reply #10 on: September 18, 2012, 11:24:47 AM »
The SPC has issued a Mesoscale Discussion for most of NJ and surrounding states.  This is just discussing the increasing threat of thunderstorms with wind damage and isolated tornadoes.  There will likely be either a Severe Thunderstorm Watch or Tornado Watch issued by this afternoon.  If only a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is issued, it still means there is a potential for tornadic activity!!

The SPC has just issued an additional Mesoscale Discussion outlining the likely increase from Slight to Moderate Risk for severe weather for most of NJ.  This area will be clarified in the official update at 12:30 PM.  Increase will be for damaging winds and possibly an increase for tornado threats.  It is possible for just about every type of mesoscale convection this afternoon.

Here comes the squall line of storms.  So far just Severe Thunderstorm Warnings associated with this line.  Several bowing segments/bow echoes on the radar.  These are areas that appear to bow out ahead of the main line, being forced forward by high straight line winds from behind.
