Fluke regs...when they start???
« on: October 09, 2012, 06:55:01 PM »
Sitting here with my 10 yr old and he asks the question about fluke keeper size when I was his age.

Did the whole google/yahoo search..."history of nj fluke regs, when did fluke regs begin"....etc..came up empty.

Anyone have any info or remember offhand?  Defintely got me interested as to when all this started.

Kinda remember a 13" min size early 80's??  Could be wrong??

When I was a 10 year old kid, my brothers and I kept everything we caught, thinking we were big game fishermen. ;DAt that time kids could get away with anything. Now-a-Days, kids can get arrested for anything.
I've spent most of my life fishing, the rest I've just wasted     <'((((><

Pretty sure it was 1992.....i remember coming back from the Gulf War in Aug 1992....went fluking with dad and being like
:headscra:  dad...what do u mean 14 inches to keep?....u must be hungry as hell with all the 12 inchers you catch!   rofla

If the limit was before 92.....i must have violated every year from 1978 thru 1989 as i was fishing the jetties of brigantine  every morning of the summer catching Fluke,Weakies,Kings and Blackfish since the age of 8 until i went into the service.

From that article it would appear that a bag limit was established starting in 1992 or 1993.  However, I still think there were minimum size regulations well before that.  But, I can't say exactly when they started.

"States are now required to establish, for recreational fishing, a 14-inch minimum size limit on fluke - New Jersey's is currently 13 inches - and to set a daily limit of six fluke per angler."

From page 1 of that news article, first and second paragraph.

Quote
Recreational anglers who fish for summer flounder off the New Jersey coast will encounter, for the first time, a shortened season and a daily possession limit in 1993, officials of the state Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife said last week.

New Jersey will implement its new rules to comply with new federal regulations that apply to states along the East Coast, said Bruce Freeman, a division research scientist.

That's what I was reading.  It says they are establishing a possession limit.  However, I believe there was a minimum size well before then. :headscra:

I've got some old pics from that era from Battle of the Bands in high school.  ;D

I believe the size limit for Fluke in New York was 14" in the late 70's and early  80's  I don't remember how many though.

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.
