Power Pro?
« on: March 12, 2008, 06:13:45 PM »
Is this line that thin? I was looking on Cabalas and they compare its diameter to other lines. 20 lb power pro same diameter as 8lb something or other.Doesnt say what type line they are comparing it to. Its like you would need twice as much of power pro to spool a reel. Am I reading this wrong??

Nope, braid is about 1/4 the diameter of mono at any given lb test.

That is what allows you to use less wiehgt when bottom fishing and spool more line, heavier lb test onto a smaller reel.

I have 50lb braid on an avet SX which is an incredibly tiny reel.
I have at least 300 yards on it.

I have at least 250+ yards of braid on a spinning reel(s) rated for 110 yards of 8lb mono.

No, the line diameter of PP is much smaller than mono of similar strength.

Spool your reels part of the way up with some old mono as backing.

If you try and FILL your reels with just the PP you'll go broke.

Spooling with some mono backing also prevents line slippage on the spool.

So if I take 100 yards of mono off I should be able to get about 200 yards of PP on?  Does that sound about right?

Not really. especially when you figure that braid is good for 3-4 seasons EASY.

Mono, you need to change just about every year making mono more expensive over the long haul.

I reco just covering the spool with mono (until the metal is no longer visible, then filling the rest up with braid.

Buy it in bulk, it is cheaper.

Braid will last you a LONG Long time.

Plus you just missed a good sale over at Grumpys in Seaside Park they were selling Power Pro at 30% off.

All my reels have been changed over to PP.  The spinning reels have about 40% mono and 60% braid where as the conventional has mono just to fill the bottom of the spool for no slippage and the rest PP.

Spinning reels have 30# and the conventional reel has 40#.  I do not change my mono for a couple of reasons. 1) light never gets to it to degrade it and 2) I wash my reels after every outing to get the salt and sand off the line.  I use a light spray of warm water and a very mild solution of water and dish detergent.

I have had no problems so far.

Happy Catching

It's still a waste of money filling the reel.

To each his own though.

So, if you do it this way, then all of the braid at the bottom that you use to fill a spool is wasted.

Never get's used but still needs to be changed  unless you want to start splicing.

Better off just filling par way with mono.

No need to fill all the way with braid.

You still get plenty of line on your reel.

And save a buck here and there.

These days, with rising prices, every buck counts.

Don't forget you can reverse the braid just by spooling onto an empty reel till you get to the mono retie and spool back up.  Instant new line.

Shimano recommends removing the line at the end of the season to prevent spool corrosion from the salt water that may accumulate underneath.

Anyone ever had an issue with this when removing old braid after a couple of seasons? 5hrug

Frankeu,

It depends on what pound test line you are taking off the reel.  If you take off 100 yards of 8# test you will get about 100 yards of 20# Power Pro on the spool.  If you are taking off 100 yards of 15# test then you will get about 200 yards back on.

If you would like to get more precise check this out http://njsaltwaterfisherman.com/forums/index.php?topic=2727.msg22801;topicseen#msg22801

Not really, the line at the bottom of the spool is much more susceptible to rotting out from the salt water.

No matter how good you rinse your reel, never get it all out.

Right, so in 3 years, put it on another reel.

Everybody has good points.  What I usually do is get a 500 yard spool and split it between two reels.  I use mono for filler.

This allows me to have 250 yards of braid on my reel.  This gives me enough line to  compensation for when I break off from a snag or cut back some because of a fray.

IMO there is no need to use any more tnan 250 yards of braid.  My goodness, that's 750 feet of line.  How deep of water are you fishing in where you will ever have that much line out?  If you fish in 100 feet of water and have a 3:1 scope of line out, that's still only 300 feet of line, not even half of your spool.

That is my opinion on this.

Nah, sitting on the bottom of a spool, constantly damp with saltwater deteriorates the line quickly.

Better off just getting new line.

No way am I using the same line three seasons, I don't vare what kind it is.

One and done.
