Anyone know which tackle shops along Rt36 have the nicest and cheapest spearing? Some place sell them and they are all mush and a little pricey.

if your using them for Fluke, go to Smelts.. its like spearing on Steroids.. AH bait and tackle has them fresh every morning.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.
Call Nick for open boat, 973-417-5756, or on Channel 68.

fred's bait and tackle has packages of spearing for $4.50 and I found them very good. We killed the fluke the other day with them.

I actually do not like Fred's Spearing or Smelt. Turn to mush instantly.

Crabby's on West Front Street Keyport has Jumbo Spearing (smelt sized, may even be smelt), for $4.99 a pack and work great UNLESS someone leaves them sitting out of the cooler all day and they turn to mush, never to be saved for the next trip.

My buddy has been picking up our fluke bait in bulk from Spring Lake Freezer.. Spearing and peruvians.. by far cheaper than bait stores.. Just need to have freezer space to store the big blocks

A n old Sharpie once told me to make sure the spearing yopu use are local caught and not foreign as they are not the same and MUCH beter results with locally caught vs foreign (peruvian) spearing.

Sounds logical, especially if the color of the spearing a bit different.

Whataver the ones Crabby is selling, they work well for me and excellent quality (even when slightly thawed).

There are some shallow spots in Morgan Creek where you can seine your own spearing. You can also pot your own killies there was well.

Crabby's B&T in Keyport is @ a 20-30 minutes (round trip) from Morgan.

I may not be old or sharp but my gut tells me down bottom of RB the flukesses can't tell the color difference-- if there is any. My recent actual, but decidedly unscientific results, also bear out-- the peruvians catch more and bigger fish than the lil guys. I actually leave a bag out, just like I did that day  >:D , then refreeze any unused, and have not had mush problems. Even better, get both kinds and see what is working best for you on that particular day.

BTW- Those monsters you had that day were the peruvians- the local ones I have seen are less than half that size.

Heck, I even still use real squid with good results.....

Nothing like fresh spearing caught in a seine and used that day.....nice and firm, bright silverside, etc. best bait is always fresh, not frozen.

i bought a 24' seine net last year. now i seine down by me, on Mystic Island. the spearing i get from there are HUGE. and, like someone just said, best to use fresh, the silver stays shiny, and they are not mush. find a shallow area, and bring the kids, they'll love to help

im with the general census,, peruvian smelt is the way togo.

on another note, to help keep spearing and smelt fresh, i have a little 6pack hard cooler that is great for holding some ice and your pack of bait, keeping it fresh with out opening up the big box all the time. the spearing will stay a nice green and not fade.
