If you only had one choice under the penalty of death I would choose the AVA A27 with a chartreuse color tail.

I have caught more bass off that lure than other.  Cast it out and use a slow retrieve.  Let it bounce off the bottom, plus did I mention to retrieve it slow...If you think the slow is not slow enough slow it down more.  As long as you feel it bounce off the bottom your doing okay.

By the way I think I forgot to mention to retrieve the lure slow.   ;D

Joe, If you want a plug to use, black bomber at night, schoolbus bomber during the day. As Paul said with the retrieve, S-L-O-W. If you think the lure is barely moving, slow down even more.  TT^

J. D M   Welcome
I dont know where you plan to fish and under what conditons. So I can suggest to search for some good info. and then built your arsenal.
Poopers, divers, swimmers, needles, are a  good start.I like white, black and yellow.
 SUGGEST a  budget under $900.00 to a $1000.00 to start.  TT^ ;D

If I had to choose a top water plug it probably would be a metal lip swimmer again retrieved slow.  Probably in a shade of yellow for the daytime and something like a black for the night shift.  But soon, very soon it will not make to much difference which lure you choose the bite will be on and your practicing time is over.  Game On...

Not sure but did anyone say "teaser rig" ???  There are lots of choices for teasers but when small bait is present the teaser ahead of any lure ,be it metal or plug catches most fish for me. I like them all but color can be most important. Soft plastics, bucktail, feathers, saltwater flies. Yellow is one of favorites but green, black and all white are always in my bag.Sand eel soft plastics can be deadly coupled with any metal lure especially thin profile lures. As soon as the ocean is fishable again get out there. There are bass in the big pond  ;D

They are easier than you think.  I have been making mine for years.  By making your own teasers you can control the color combination's.  By doing this, you can be sure to be able to match the hatch for what ever bait is around.

If you would like to get together I can show you the basics to get you started.  I can make up a list of some simple things to get you started that won't break the bank.

For instance all you need is a basic tying vice.  Mine cost all of about 30 bucks.  The ones at Cabela's are good and come with everything you need except the materials.

Locally I get a lot of my material at Betty & Nicks in Seaside Park.  John has more than most stores around the area.

I would recommend just getting use to tying and then later you can go crazy with all the different hairs, bucktails and other materials to tie things out of the ordinary.

They might be, but, I get a kick out of catching fish on stuff I made.  Anyone can go out and buy all the fancy new stuff but there is no better thrill than catching a bass on a teaser you tied with your own hands.  Now you have bragging rights all the way.

Plus with the winter coming on it gives me something to do when I can't get out and be on the beach.  I might tie a hundred teasers over the winter and about this time of year be down to only a hand full.

The same goes for making rigs.  I tie my own there as well.  It is simple and again so gratifying to be able to say I made the rig I caught that fish on.  Besides I feel better when I give a rig to someone new to the sport and they start to catch on their second cast.

Betty and Nicks definitely has the best tying supply locally.  For a bigger selection (way more than you need) but interesting to browse, The Sportsman's Center on Rt 130.

What kind of teasers are they Rich?

I believe they are sportfish teasers. Red gill used to make something similar in a couple of sizes. Excellent and very tough ,made from a harder plastic. They're "almost" bluefish proof ;D
