Seems like there is an million reel manufactures out there. Which also makes my life more difficult. Any more what doesnt! It might be interesting to see what you folks think are the top middle of the road reels. No specific model. Just companies that make a descent middle priced reel.  grtn

I REALLLLLLLLY like my Avet SX 5.3

GREAT for live lining for bass, deep water fluking or blackfishing (oh yeah, I hear it is real good for light tackle tuna as well :)

My father LOVES his Trinidad. The drag is very smoth, but is supposed to be somewhat fragile as wel as having a weak anti reverse 9both can be upgraded). I do not think you will run into many fish in our area that would stress that tho.

These are reports from guys out west who use light tackle, heavy braid for the long range fishing.

Without a doubt a great, smooth casting reel, altho not inexpensive by any means.

I would add a TN14 to my arsenal if I could justify the price tag (which I can't now as I have too much other stuff ;)

Hey Catfish,

You and Hareball would get along. He has the same expensive taste. I upped my insurance coverage for all the toys between Hareball, Capt. John B, and myself we have had days on the water were we had about 7-10k in toys for trolling and pitching baits. Standard coverage I think is about 2500.00 not enough. You have some nice toys there.

Spinning reels I use a mix of Penn (4400ss) Daiwa (various BG models) & Shimanos (Stardics & baitrunners).

On the conventioanl side Shimano (Calcuttas & TRs), Abus (Pro Rocket 5500-7000), Penns (940, 955s, 965s, 9s & Mag 10). I have one Avet that I use for deep water bottom fishing.

I have a few Okumas (both spinning & conventional) but they see little action.

I am coveting the Stellas but have not tried one yet. They do seem sweet.

I have some Penn spinners think they are 4000s trying to break them without success, and an old DAIWA thats not smooth but brutish everyone uses it got it from my dad

Also use the 309s for larger targets got a 320?GTI troller these are pretty bulletproof in  my opinion

hear lots of good about avet conventionals I will have to try one

I tend to like:

Spinning: Penn and Shimano
Baitcasters: ABU Garcia. Just got a Tica Caiman but have not used it yet.
Conventional: Penn

I have a couple Avets and Shimano Calcuttas and they are great reels, but I'm not sure if I would consider them "middle of the road" ..more towards "hi-end".. IMO for smaller  conventionals, the ABU Swedish made reels are hard to beat.. I have a 5500 that is almost 30 years old and still kickin! For larger conventionals, the Penn Senators, and their other "old school" models like the Jigmasterare great bang for the buck..They may not be as smooth as some of the others, but they hold up for a loong time.. From personal experience, and about 20 years selling fishing tackle (and excepting returns) going "across the board",   I'd have to say Shimanos are dollar for dollar the best bet.. Even their lowest end models are pretty decent when compared to comparably priced brands.. Also, parts tend to remain available longer after models are discontinued.. Just my .02
