I use weighted jig heads!  Just enough weight to hit bottom.  Some days 1/2oz, some days a full ounce.  Experiment and see what works the best.

If you are throwing them and you don't want bottom, you can go lighter or as much as you need to cast with and do a continual retrieve??

However, that method may just get your Fin-S chomped on by blues.  First method of retrieving and bouncing it off the bottom for weakfish and bass!

Good Luck

Good catch rb. I'm new to the canal and just started using fin S. Threw it out a few times when I was there this past weekend. Ended up trying it with a 3/8 lead head on it. How are you guys fishing them?

Yeah 3/8works well.  Just make sure it has a strong enough hook.  also, be sure you hook the lure right... in the head and out the back.

Thanks for the info. I almost tried a carolina rig, it worked pretty well in freshwater for largemouths. Need to get down there again this weekend. Hopefully Friday night.

Same concept, just different bait.  In saltwater a Carolina Rig = Fishfinder Rig and is used more for live bait techniques.  Texas Rig would work on the Fin-S, probably just as well, however weighted jig heads seem to be the key.  I keep a few of each size in my lure bag and pick one based on the current.

Eventually the bass should be moving out and you may see more action at the Inlet as opposed to the Canal, so keep an ear out for that.  As Fall approaches and the Fall Run progresses, a lot of those bass will move out and into the ocean.

Good Luck!

Went out today around noon acros from state police.  A lot of bait fish in there.
Had a 12" blue that was lost as it surfaced and a small sea bass.   Stopped up by Pine Bluff after that, bunch of guys up there.  one guy was hitting small sea bass every cast.  Someone said they got a blue.
Current was rather calm the whole time.

A Carolina Rig and a Drop Shot Rig are basically two opposite ways of rigging.  A Carolina Rig is a weight first rig, i.e. the weight is in front of the bait.  A Drop Shot Rig is a weight second rig, i.e. the bait is rigged in front of the sinker.

Here are some pics.  The sinker weights, leader lengths, hook sizes, etc. can be whatever you need them to be.

In saltwater a drop shop would = a basic bottom fishing setup or a hi low type setup minus 1 hook...although some people get fancy and use more than 1 hook when dropshotting.

Went to the canal this morning (9/21) for some C&R Tog with my brother-in-law, 2 of his teenage sons and thier friend.

Got there at slack tide with 3 doz green crabs and had steady action with Tog and a couple of small Sea bass.

The kids had a great time and everyone got a few for about 2 hours until the current started moving pretty good. We got 3 or 4 that were keeper sized but threw them back anyway.

Attached is a pic of me with the "pool fish".
