I don't see a problem. the fish was documented/inspected. I would have tried my best to keep that specimen alive and released after it was inspected. in the end the fish deserved better.

With reference to the use of stinger hooks for potential records. The following is a direct quote off the IGFA website;

"The use of a dangling or swinging hook is prohibited."

I interpet the above to mean that if a stinger hook is attached to the main hook by a piece of mono or wire (or perhaps even the new assist style hooks) that the catch is disqualified for becoming an IGFA certified record. However, I'm not 100% sure that if a stinger hook was attached via surgical tubing (ala how bass fisherman attach a stinger hook to their spinner baits) or how I'm now attaching a stinger hook (via a swivel) is legal or not  .

Hi Skolmann,

That is not totally correct! Swinging or dangling hooks with no bait attached are prohibited. If you have a strip bait, and it is on the primary and secondary hook, it is legal as mentioned in the rules.

The rules are strict ... I do question some new techniques that may not be covered.

Please refer to pages 3-4, amongst other places in the rules.

Refer to item #2 in section G. Granted the title of that section is 'Hooks For Bait Fishing'--which could lead to the debate about is using a bucktail tipped with a bait strip considered to be fishing with bait or an artifical.

In going back and re-reading section G, I noticed that in item 1 it states the following;

 "For live or dead bait fishing no more than two single hooks may be used. Both must be firmly imbedded in or securely attached to the bait. The eyes of the hooks must be no less than a hook's length (the length of the largest hook used) apart and no more than 18 inches (45.72 cm) apart. The only exception is that the point of one hook may be passed   through the eye of the other hook."

To be honest I'm now confused.

Hi Skolmann,

I agree that the rules are not reader friendly. I think you would also agree they need to rewrite some sections to clearing approve or disapprove some recent techniques and equipment (i.e. braid) that are being used. Braid is such a known word and line type that they can call it our explicitly.

If catching a fish on a plug with two treble hooks is ok, then the bucktail will be.  Plugs have 6 or 9 hooks on them.  Now,  a pez despenser fluke with a tail that fell into the chum grinder should not be counted.

  The more that comes out about this story the more it stinks.
  Now animals are blamed for eating the fish?  Holy $#@%!!!  Its almost comical at this point!

   I also read that the marine biologist that did the the inspection was George Costanza of Queens. Rumor has it there was a golf ball lodged in the flukes mouth.

To me the pic above looks like the hand is hiding the tail.  The fish is dead no need to hold it in place.  Other pic show the tail is very red like there is skin missing.

I think the hand is squeezing the tail to get the fin rays to extend for full measurement.

I think a lot of people have a case of the green monster named ENVY rising to the top.  I have never heard anything attributed to what this lady said.  All I have heard are a bunch of opinions and 'some one said that'.  People are forming opinions on a picture of dubious quality.  They are interpreting this picture to what pleases them.

  These, to me, are not thing I want to form an opinion on.  I will just sit back and let the powers to be do their research and make their determination.  They are up close to this event and have facts, not rumors.
